Diagnostic Radiology Jobs

A very specialized area of medicine is diagnostic radiology. Doctors who specialize in radiology make up only about one percent of the physician population. Radiologists and the field of radiology play an extremely significant role in modern medicine. They use ultrasounds, gamma rays, x-rays, radioactive isotopes, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to diagnose and treat diseases such as cancer, blood diseases, lung disease and heart disease. There are many job opportunities in the field of radiology with the proper education and training.  

Regardless of what type of job you are interested in, to become a radiologist, there are some general qualifications you must earn to work in the field. Like any other physicians, radiologists must graduate from an accredited medical school and receive a license to practice medicine. After that, they are required to complete at least four years of graduate medical school specializing in diagnostic radiology. This is usually completed as a residency at a hospital or clinic. Radiologists are also required to be board certified. The requirement for board certification entails passing an examination given by the American Board of Radiology.

Once a radiologist has graduated and has been certified, there are a large number of radiology jobs available. Specialized radiology jobs include Cardiovascular Radiology, which involves diagnosing diseases of the blood system. Chest Radiology focuses on illnesses in the chest and includes heart and lung diseases. Breast Radiology focuses on the science of breast examination and illnesses, like breast cancer, and Gastrointestinal Radiology focuses on the stomach and gastrointestinal tract.

Not only are there various types of radiology jobs that focus on specific parts of the body, there are also different categories of radiology that use highly specialized technology. Radiology CT, or radiology computer topography, (RCT), uses computers to x-ray and examine bone along with soft tissue; intervention radiology, uses fluoroscopy to takes real-time images of moving structures inside the body; and ultrasound imaging techniques are all types of radiologic services.

A way to get into the radiology field without graduating from medical school is by becoming a radiology nurse. Radiology nurses care for patients through radiology treatments and provide care plans for before and after every procedure. To become a radiology nurse, graduation from an accredited nursing school is required, as well as testing to receive a nursing license and then taking specialized courses in radiology. This type of education is mandatory in order to become specially certified and licensed to work in the field of radiology.

Diagnostic radiology can be a promising career path for those with the right training and education. Radiologists practice in various locales, such as in the offices of medical practitioners, clinics and diagnostic imaging centers. Depending on the particular set of skills one possesses, there are even employment opportunities in research centers. The use of applied sciences in diagnosis has created a high demand for radiology professionals. Radiology has gained great significance in the diagnostic field.
